Active Bodies Active Minds

The MLS W.O.R.K.S. Active Bodies Active Minds Summer Reading and Fitness program partners MLS W.O.R.K.S (Major League Soccer's community outreach initiative) with the creators of the award-winning, best selling Summer Bridge Activities (SBA) workbook series (published by Carson-Dellosa Publishing) and the Center for Summer Learning at Johns Hopkins University to educate children, parents, and teachers about the importance of physical and mental fitness during the summer months. Active Bodies Active Minds is a soccer-centered community outreach initiative that provides an online summer fitness and reading program to motivate and reward children for summer reading and exercise.

Program Mission: To excite, encourage, and generate interest in both physical and academic activity during the summer months. Our goal is that these summer-based activities will lead to better academic performance and an increase in playtime around the year.

Created by a concerned parent and two classroom teachers, Summer Bridge Activities is committed to keeping children active, happy, and learning throughout the summer. Summer Bridge Activities aims to prevent summer learning loss and encourages parents to become involved with their child’s education and well-being during the summer vacation.

MLS W.O.R.K.S., Major League Soccer’s community outreach initiative, is dedicated to addressing important social issues affecting young people. MLS W.O.R.K.S. serves as a platform for both league and team philanthropic programs, specifically focusing on health and wellness, education, respect, fair play, leadership and human rights.

The Center for Summer Learning’s mission is to create opportunities for high-quality summer learning for all young people. Based at the Johns Hopkins University School of Education, the Center is committed to expanding summer learning opportunities for disadvantaged children and youth as a strategy for closing the achievement gap and promoting healthy youth development.

How does Active Bodies Active Minds work?
It’s simple!

Go to the Summer Reading and Summer Fitness Page each month this summer (June, July, and August) to download and print that month’s reading log and fitness log. Each log has a different monthly goal for you to meet (or beat!).

Use the reading lists to choose a book, or find a book on your own that you think you’ll enjoy. Then, choose several activities from the fitness list that you’d like to try. Talk to a parent or guardian about the books and activities that you’ve selected. They may have suggestions too!

Use the logs to track the time that you spend reading and exercising. At the end of each month, tally your time and see if you meet (or beat) the goal. Then, have a parent or guardian sign your logs, and be sure to keep them in a safe place!

After you complete the program, come back to the site to register for your chance to win a session at The David Beckham Academy!

Have fun this summer and enjoy the adventures that lie ahead. We know that you can achieve your goals!

Twellman Parents -
Help your children get started by finding the reading log and the fitness log and the reading and fitness lists. The reading lists include grade-level appropriate suggestions to help your children find new books to read, while the fitness list provides fun ideas to help keep them active during the summer months.

You are your children's most important coach. Encourage them to read and get plenty of exercise, and help them track their progress during the summer with the reading and fitness logs. Ask questions about the books they're reading, help them find new books, and even get outside and kick around the soccer ball! To learn how you can become your children's most supportive coach and biggest fan, visit the Parent’s Page for more information on summer learning and summer fitness. And most importantly, have fun!
